March 25, 2009
Your Excellency, President of USA, Mr. Barack Obama:
This letter is to request you to conduct a UN sponsored referendum in the Tamil-inhabited areas of Sri Lanka and initiate UNTATE which stands for United Nations Transitional Administration in Tamil Eelam. Tamils have always supported a negotiated settlement through out their 50 years of freedom struggle and will welcome this initiative.
As you are aware of the Sri Lankan government’s genocide of Tamils, it is essential for the United States of America to act promptly and positively to stop Genocide with out additional delay.
- More than 100,000 Tamils killed or disappeared.
- More than 20,000 Tamil children orphaned.
- More than 35,000 Tamil women widowed.
- Numerous schools, houses, hospitals, churches, temples, villages and livelihood destroyed.
- More than 600,000 Tamils internally displaced as refugees.
- Nearly 1 Million Tamils made to flee the country.
Is this ethnic cleansing and genocide or is this the outcome of defending the Sri Lankan sovereignty?
Whatever be the name one calls it, as per his/her convenience, all Representative to the UN, HRW, UNHCR and Aid agencies acknowledged that Tamils are discriminated, marginalized and brutalized by the Sri Lankan Government.
Numerous reputable sources illustrate that “Tamils are living in a constant state of fear under the Sri Lankan Armed Forces”.
Police evict Tamils from Colombo (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6729555.stm)
While we advocate democracy and freedom of speech in every aspects of our action, it is rational to follow a similar approach to the solution of Tamils in Sri Lanka. People from the North and Eastern part of Sri Lanka must be the one to decide on what they want in the UN sponsored referendum. Kindly give a chance of “Freedom of Expression” to the Tamils.
Please facilitate for the “Will of the People to speak”.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Kandhan.

Yes. We, Tamils, need a UN sponsored referendum to decide what we want before the Singala colonization starts in North Sri Lanka. SL government already colonised in East( South of Tamil Eelam) Sri Lanka.
The will never be a seperate state in Sri Lanka! Get over it already!
There couldn’t be a better justification than this open letter outlines. The reasons are crystal clear and cut-and-dry; we just need to have a fair referendum that will enable us to voice the Tamils opinion in an unequivocal way. Then everyone can understand what the real problem in Sri Lanka is. As the GOSL (Government of Sinhala Lanka) says, if the problem is the LTTE, we will find that out by this democratical way. If the majoriy of the Tamils say, they wanted to live in harmony within the unitary Sri Lanka, then so be it. Nevertheless, UN must be monitoring the referundum as the cooligan Sinhala forces and some paramilitaries will run the referndum in the gunpoint and force the Tamils to vote in their favour. We are talking about democracy here just the way the western countries wanted. Now what are the western countries waiting for. Why can’t they push for a referendum.
“UN sponsored referendum in the Tamil-inhabited areas of Sri Lanka” is the need of the hour.
All concerns of International govts of supporting the tamil people instead of the Tigers or the political parties would also be met with such an initiative..
Algeria was born out of a referendum out of French rule. It is the right thing to do. I hope even the Sinhalese brothers will trust such a motion rather than blaming the tigers.
we people tamil want a separate state in Sri lanka not under the Sri Lanka. we lost nearly 120000 people in this genoside against tamil from 1956. so we are not going to be within the unitary sri lanka. As a tamil person i lost everything every moment of happiness. i feel very bad.Ltte is fighting for our freedom. they are fighting to gain back our rights. so we support Ltte. there are no other party in Sri lanka for tamils. this is the time all tamil have to join together to get our freedom
It’s an excellent appeal with outstanding justification with supporting electronic documentation. Thank you, Mr. Kandhan.
May God bless you and hope for Eelam!
Well written, Kandhan!
Yes, unlike Bush, Obama is quite aware of the situation in the rogue state of SL. But will he do something about it? Highly unlikely.
If one notes the steps of his administration with regards to foreign policy, the unpleasant truth is that they are the same as those of the hated Bush administration. President Obama is just a better speaker than former President Bush. He knows how to talk the talk, but when it comes to walking the talk, he is found seriously wanting. He got elected on the promise of “change” but his actions, so far at least, are all about “continuation”. No harm in trying, though. A UN referendum is just what is needed.
FREE TAMIL EELAM!!!
A movement of seeking rights & justice, happening for more than 25 years cannot be ignored. A well written letter.
I hate to rain on sombody’s parade. Kandhan, you intention may be good, but all this talk of referendum will remain a pipe dream. The first country to vote against that in UN would be India since if India agrees to such a proposal then it will be forced to conduct a referendum in Kashmir (which it’s actually duty bound as per the 1948 pending UN resolution) and in Assam and Manipur as per the wishes of the majority there. Not only that, a separate country down south is not in the best interests of India for geo-political reasons. The best solution is to have a federal setup with provincial autonomy. Anything more than that will never receive international support, period. The tamil diaspora should realize this practical aspect and stop funding ltte or else the bloodshed will countinue for another 30 years. As much as the minority tamils in SL would like to carry on their struggle for many decades the majority singalese would not like to give up either and this will continue for another generation. Already, the life of a generation of youth in the north and east of SL has been laid to waste and one more generation will follow suit. When two successive generations have sub-standard existence then there will be situation where the tamil population will be only about 2% numerically in strength and this will make things even more difficult. In the last 20 years, the eelam tamil population (excluding the estate tamils) has come down from 12% to 8%. Has anyone thought about this? Now, a separate nation looks ridiculus as 8% population demanding 35% of the land area. This is against natural justice, so even international players won’t support this. Let’s be pragmatic.
Kumar:
It does not make sense for Americans or Japanese to vote to decide what Tamils want.. ..Similarly it does not make sense for me to vote for what the Eelam Tamils want..The Eelam Tamils have the right to vote to decide their fate..What we need is a referendum similar to that was conducted in Algeria..The people decided, if they want to be part of France or not..Incidentally the people wanted to be ruled by themselves..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_referendum_on_Algerian_self-determination,_1961
UN can facilitate such an action. UN has ensured the freedom of Kosovo recently..
The comparison of Issue in Kashmir and Sri lanka is a valid comment..But some of the differences are Indian govt does not use cluster bomb its own towns, does not use kafir planes on its people or phosphorous bombs on its people..Also the quality/economy of life in Kashmir is far better than SL administered Eelam..Also the party that won the election this time in Kashmir, National Conference agrees with the sovereignty of India..Incidentally the majority winning party in Eelam Tamils are freedom supporters (at least in the north..North east CM is complaining that he does not have any power implying the elections were just ceremonial)..
Coming to point abt sq ft of land per person..it is a sad argument but I will still post my comments..We have more than a billion people in India..Ukrainians have much more land for the people living there..So can we argue that it is unfair for you to have so much land and occupy their land..About size of country and economy..Singapore is a developed/prosperous nation and considered an Asian tiger and is only as big as a city..Israel and Palestine are also very small countries..It is unfair to deny freedom just because they are small in number or space..
The point is not geopolitical concerns or how many square ft of land/per person..We are calling ourselves a civilized society..The question is what the locals seek. Why do you fear to ask the people..
Regards,
I welcome and appreciate, Mr. Kumar, your intellectual analysis, recommendation and sermon from your point of view. I come to understand that your have a very little, limited knowledge of Sri Lanka and what is going there and its effects gained from print and visual media. Your arithmetic, India’s interests and other comparisons are logically correct but irrelevant to the crisis. It is simply a struggle by a human specie facing extinction. You got to put on the shoes to feel the pinch. I am tempted to write but something in mind stops. Mr. Robinin has responded to you well enough to your Arithmetic with examples. Therefore, if you are really interested to learn more in good faith firstly you should know the history of the last at least 500 years and especially the political developments in the last 60 years of your neighbour Sri Lanka; if you want respond to me on this forum, please! May God bless you!
