“When Vampire rules, the Law feasts on corpse” – Poet Bharathi.
About 2500 years ago in northern India, religious priests imposed superstitions and ritualism and attempted to rule over the political lords, by dividing the people inciting intolerance and violence. To restore the civilization, reformers like Mahavir and Buddha rose from the ruling class to preach Love and Non Violence. From then onwards India became a land to emulate by the rest of the world. But now again, India is pushed into oblivion, by the same divisive forces. The religious fundamentalists have found some space to regain some prominence.
When the larger India was divided along the communal lines, it was alleged that many Hindu temples were demolished in the newly created state of Pakistan. Afterwards Pakistan became a theocratic state of Islam and has been in continuous dispute with India over boundary issue in Kashmir. Pakistan being a smaller state resorted to proxy war and cross border terrorism, to destabilize secular India. This is one of the reasons for a section of Hindus willing to support fundamentalist organizations which have mushroomed for the cause of protection of the Hindu Religion. If it is not considered as a justification for Hindu terrorism then it can be well said that the Hindu terrorism is a reaction to Islamic terrorism.
The Hindu fundamentalists are collectively called Sangh Parivar or Hindutwa Brigade which include Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (R.S.S), the mastermind of Hindu fundamentalist ideologies, known for alleged involvement in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, Bharathiya Jananata Party (B.J.P), their political wing, and other outfits such as Bajrang Dal, Viswa Hindu Parishad (V.H.P), Hindu Munnani, Ramar Sene (which are said to act independently ), etc . This is very similar to fundamentalist organizations operating in different names in Pakistan and elsewhere in the world.
These fundamentalists, wherever they operate, whichever religion they follow, have a common method of demolishing the monuments, to rewrite and hide the true history. This is also one of the methods to arouse the sensitive feelings of the people to communalize the electorate for assuming political power.

Babri Masjid (India)
On December 6, 1992, few religious fundamentalist organizations gathered at Ayodhya and demolished Babri Masjid. They committed this crime under the pretext that the monument of Emperor Babar, who came from Afghanistan to establish Muslim rule in India, was built over a temple of Hindu God Ram, around 500 years ago.
If we have to believe the words of the organizers of that event , the B.J.P leaders, that the day was the saddest day in their life , then it must be true that the Congress party which ruled the country at that time is even more communal than B.J.P, for having deliberately failed to prevent such mobilization and evaded its executive responsibility to defend a monument of historical importance. This event clearly proved that demolition of any structure belonging to minority faith is possible in a democratic country by surrendering authority to fundamentalists.
The chain of events that followed is recorded in the recent history – the bomb blasts, the terrorist attacks on Hindu temples, parliament and public places, the burning of Hindu pilgrims, the state sponsored terrorism and riots in Gujarat state against Muslims, the competitive conversion tactics and the resultant communal flare up against Christians, torching of churches in Orissa and such events are still in public memory .
Now, the B.J.P is running a state Government in the south Indian state of Karnataka. This political power has assured support and protection to implement the agenda of Hindu fundamentalists through their front and back organizations to continue their experiments in Karnataka. Now the anti social elements in Karnataka are encouraged and licensed to acts of violence in whatever way they wish. One of their agents in Karnataka became a self declared cultural police and sent vandals to forcibly enter a pub in Mangalore to beat the women. The easiest cowardice adventure of a fundamentalist is to instill fear in the society by beating and confining woman. They continued their attrocity in the event of Valentines day.

A statue of Charlie Chaplin
Closely following that incident, they have disallowed the installation of a 20m high statue of Charlie Chaplin, just as a set to make a film in Karnataka. The director of the film Hegde claimed that, those opposed have argued ‘Chaplin is a Christian and his contribution to India is nil” . Some media reports described this as “cultural intolerance” just to avoid using the term “religious intolerance” because it is the media which subtly encourages the religious fundamentalism in India. We do not understand what “culture” represented by Charlie Chaplin is tolerable or intolerable. Sense of humor should be the last thing that can be expected from fundamentalists who demolished Babri Masjith with a Sense of Vengeance.
The power to preserve communal harmony, protect places of worship, retain monuments of heritage and to defend the true spirit and idea of India, lies in the hands of the people. They possess the most precious and valuable tool to say no to fundamentalist ideas.

Bamyan Budha Statue (Afghanistan)
The Hindu fundamentalists have their friends in other religions too. The whole of Indian subcontinent from Afghanistan to Sri Lanka has fallen prey to the fundamentalist rulers. In 2001 Taleban, the ruling Islamic fundamentalists of Afghanistan, declared that, the two monumental statues of standing Buddhas were “idols” (which are forbidden under Islamic Sharia law) and destroyed Bamyan Buddha statues, which were considered as Heritage monuments by the world.
And recently in this month Taleban have also attacked the Shrine of the 17′ th century mystic Pashto poet Rahman Baba in Peshavar to oppose the participation of women in the musical offerings of the shrine. But it goes without saying that these Wahhabi tribal fundamentalists cannot tolerate the Sufi, mystical tradition of Islam which promotes universal brotherhood through poems, songs and music. For those who consider some words as blasphemous, the songs and poems may be threatening.

The Jaffna Tamil Library (Sri Lanka)
When we extend our thoughts and see that powerful language is always dreaded by uncivilised tribes, we cannot forget the dastardly act of burning of Jaffna Tamil Library in 1981 by the Sinhala Buddhist fundamentalists in Srilanka. They set ablaze one of the biggest libraries in Asia which was a home for about 97,000 rare manuscripts and books. The destroyed included works of historic and cultural values and Tamil Hindu Philosophical works.

Gurudwara Sikh Temple (London)
And last week, a Gurudhwara in London has been burnt by Racists in an act of sabotage showing intolerance towards other religions. The Sikh religion itself was originally established to promote interfaith harmony between Hindus and Muslims. This only shows that in the history of civilisation, even a mediater can become a victim or a disputed party if the fundamentalists rule the roost.
Fundamentalism has been globalised. This could be addressed only by joining together of the people who promote and enjoy Love, Compassion and Peace globally. The hate has no boundaries but Love is still more larger enough to encompass all including the fundamentalists.

“Sense of humor should be the last thing that can be expected from fundamentalists”

Nicely written. It made me imagine ….
I would ask the fundamentalists to tell me a sample joke, next time. Wonder what would the joke be! :-)

Babri may be compared with Buddha. Right?
Basic idea in their minds is to get some advantage & influence from the Society and to gain money. Basic motto is to get wealth by any way of act. Even the celebration of Lover’s day, mother’s day though it has described as most respectable by the western countries , their motto too gain some money.
Malar:
I like your Dhoni batting at Kalugu..
Very few of this fundamentalists really follow fundamental religions themselves..
A point in case is Pramod Mahajan who was considered no 2 of BJP. His son was dabbling with drugs, he was dabbling with women and money. Outlook reported that he was so reckless with his money deals, that he received fax on money deals on the public fax machine on a five star hotel in India. The reason I talk about a dead person here is we have so many holy cows, which are in reality hormone injected, infected cows..And we make heroes out of them..
I sincerely doubt that if Varun Gandhi has read the Gita by which he is swearing. I am sure this can be extended to the poppy farming Talibans too..
What we call Fundamentalism is not new to our culture or our neighbors. They have only taken different forms from tribal, casteist or language or nationalistic.
Fundamentalism as we see it is collective bargaining(with guns/violence), fear of external influence/change and reluctance to share power..As resources becomes scarcer and influence speedened up by transportation/media/communication, the fear increases in decibels and violence..And with the shock of change, an inertia to change/overshocked to react, people reach out to formulas(bibles, Kurans, Vedas) that were valid at one point of time.
Let me give a popular example, Bible in its first few chapters of the original form, explains when you should release a slave in case he/she get married. It explains the amount of control you have over the new slave. And imagine you have a problem and you seek the original Bible for your solution, what kind of solution do we expect. The same goes with our much touted Vedas..
Obviously this books have contradictions too. The same Bible talks abt when a foreigner or minority or aged or handicapped feels oppressed in your country, it is wrong.
Good article..Let the fundamentalist do their job and let us do our jobs..In the end, fundamentalist have a serious flaw. Their children cant practice what they preach and their flaw in arguments will be seen through in 10-15 years as it happened with BJP..But then a new sort of fundamentalism(resistance to thinking) will start..
Regards,
Malarthamil: Well written article. But who is going to control Fundamentalist from their racist and chauvinist acts?
The famous saying is when a person is alone he is o.k – His views are moderate.
But when they joined together as a group their views and actions are always aggressive and anti civilization.
“If it is not considered as a justification for Hindu terrorism then it can be well said that the Hindu terrorism is a reaction to Islamic terrorism.”
Malar:
Do you sincerely believe Hindu terrorism is a reaction to Islamic terrorism.
The recent RSS roots of Hindu terrorism started with the Kings and upper castes of North India in the pre-independence days, who hated the Gandhian way of politics..Which included the muslim league asking for seperate country but also lower castes getting equal rights- Like sitting equally with them in meetings..This was shown in “Hey Ram”..Obviously they are changing their colors, as other religions are making in-roads on this marketing opportunity..
Religious terrorism has existed way before, and saying it as an outcome of terrorism in other religion is a convenient view..Buddhism and Sikhism were built against not only against Muslim terrorism but also state sponsored Hindu Terrorism..
Also remember the 1000s Jains hanged in tamilnadu to avoid spread of Jainism in Pandyan kingdom or Saivite Cholas gouging eyes of a vaishnavite..I think, Organized Religions are closely tied with terrorism , be it Hindu or Muslim or Christians, including Buddhism in SL..
Sri Lankan Government recently claimed that they built a new building at Jaffna to compensate the library burnt by Sinhala thugs and ministers two decades ago. Unfortunately Sri Lanka government doesn’t understand that the biggest and most valuable things in the library are Books and those old manuscripts. Who is going to replace those things? Will it be possible to recreate those burnt books and valuables?
Ronin: We should not forget that Cholas & Pandyas might did it 1000 years before. However Sri Lankan Government and Taleban are doing currently at 21st century which can’t be tolerated and accepted by the any peace loving and civilized society. We need to be more diligent when we compare the events.
Kandhan:
I don’t see any difference between caste-based and religious based Hindu fundamentalism/divide-rule practiced by the likes of RSS/VHP, smartly by BJP And one by Taleban..As the direction is the same..May be the levels are different but the intention and fear is same..the result is different may be because Indians are smarter due to past experience..
Asking us not think/feel/love and use a book/myth to make decisions is a way to screw our country/brothers or anyone..
Dividing people based on the amount they accept a religion or the extent the religion accepts us, will create another layer in our country..Where we will join with fundamentalists to screw our brothers..Just like the earlier natives of ancient times who joined with religious fundamentalists to screw his brothers/sisters for power..This has happened around the world with Kings/Churches..This is a pretty standard pattern across the world and easy to identify..
And comparing this to Sri Lankan cause and applying degrees of fundamentalism, is I feel putting a degree to how much our people will be screwed..
Don’t mistake me for atheist or cong-supporter, but am only repeating what Hindu saints have told before..Pardon me..For some reason, I don’t see any good coming out of religious chauvinism, anywhere in the world. I just beg to differ in this one.. :-)
Regards,
Malarthamil: Another great piece of work. You clearly and cleverly tied various important events in to the single article. Among the crimes of destruction of Babri Masjid and Bamyan Budha statue & burning of Jaffna library and Sikh temple, I believe burning the library is a worst act of Fundamentalism and racist behavior. Monuments and Temples can be built again if needed but what ever we lost in the Jaffna Library I don’t think we will get back. Some people think I am biased in my decision. But the truth is VHP was not a government when they did the crime, they destroyed just to gain political mileage in India. Taleban destroyed Bamyan statue merely to get international attention and they don’t have much Buddhist population in Afghanistan. London event was an isolated one and it was carried out by some group of people.
But Jaffna incident was well planned by the J.R.Jayawardene Government and was carried out by his minister Gamini Dissanayake -
It had clear motive of destroying the heredity and historical evidence of Tamils in Eelam. Also preventing future generation of Tamils to use and learn the important old articles and manuscripts. Jaffna Library incident was the one element of broader “Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing”.
Ronin,
BJP cannot be isolated for pointing out individual leaders for not following morality. If BJP members fail to follow their Hindutwa policy we must be happy.
I just captured a fundamentalist psychology with reference to the destruction of monuments. I left out the other matters such as origin of terrorism, killings, genocide etc since covering all may dilute this article.
The action reaction component refers only the current spate of violence by context.
Reading ‘Da Vince Code’ may give some understanding of evolution of christian churches.( I read it few years back)
Kandhan
True, Jaffna Library is irrepairable loss.
Tamil language has lost so many precious palm leaf manuscripts in Tamil nadu itself where the sancskrit priests propagated a superstitious practice of throwing plam leaf to Cauvery on Aadi 18 festival. Many Tamils threw away their collections to rivers in the last few centuries. Even now empty palm leaf with red color coated is thrown to cauvery because we have no more old palm leaf.
Chidambaram Temple is one example of history where Tamil was treated alien and the Thevaram was left to ruin to white ants in Emperor Rajarajan period itself. All in the name of religion. Even now the issue is alive.
Malar:
You are a quite aware and well-read person, therefore I don’t think I need to spell the reasons with details/examples why I bring out the contradictions of BJP leaders more..The prime reason is that they are the ones trying to come to power by asking people not to think/feel..It is not only the concept of religons+politics am against, but also the encouraged individual human failures am against..Also the outcome of those individual failures can lead to larger social failures..And because I care abt our society..I hope I have conveyed my point in a meaningful manner..
I would be glad if BJP drops the tying up of politics and religion..That is my point..
Regards,
If your going to write something about someone make it clear at first instead of making us read EVERYTHING!!
I simply need to know what Charlie Chaplin contributed to, and I get all this…..”stuff”! Make it shorter, sweeter, and to the point!!!
For your information – Charlie Chaplin did not describe himself as a Christian but a “Humanist”. I think if he were alive today he would have been an Atheist. D. Johnson. London
I just want to say that I enjoy Vampires Suck. Ever since it was announced, I have been eagerly waiting for it to come out! I nearly passed out when I had to wait after I saw the trailer, I can’t wait to watch what is going to happen in the film! Xoxo
