There is not a single day without a public protest held by one group or the other in Tamil Nadu-India, calling for a change in India’s foreign policy with Sri Lanka.

Starting with CPI’s protest meeting in mid October, Movie Directors protest, All party Human Chain protest, Movie Actors protest, All Tamil Nadu Traders Union protest bandh, Dalit Panthers Rail Roko protest, MDMK’s protest meetings, TV Actors protest, FEFSI film workers protest, Actor Vijays fast protest, IT Engineers human chain protest with actor Surya and Karthi, Artists Exhibition to express solidarity, Lawyers protest, Doctors protest – all most everybody in the state have shown their solidarity towards stopping the war in Sri Lanka.

All these protests within a time frame of three weeks. CPI has convened an all party meeting and announced further protests in Tamil Nadu. Meantime the AISF organized a rally in New Delhi with about 25,000 students all over India to protest on the same issue.

I have not seen this many protests in India with so much buzz in my entire life. This is total show of solidarity with persons from every walk of life expressing their solidarity in a crystal clear manner.

Isn’t this the great beauty of Democracy – when people from all walks of life are able to come together and voice their concers in a dignified peacefull way. Dont you feel happy to have born in a democracy?

Wait a minute – the proper resolution of the grievience is the real crown for a true democracy and that has not happened yet. The hard fact is that the Manmohan Singh government is refusing to heed to the wishes of a large section of his own country? The Indian government has refused to pressure Sri Lanka to stop the war for unknown reasons. The Sri Lankan President Rajapakse announced last week that India has never asked him to stop the war.

“if a society does not have ways and means for an individual or group to address their grievience in a dignified peaceful way and have them resolved – you are essentially encouraging violence.”

Isn’t this what Mahatma Gandhi preached us. If USA stands for Liberty and Freedom, doesn’t India stand for Ahimsa and Peace? If Manmohan Sing fails to respect the very foundation in which our country is built, then what right do we have to fight violence?

If these incidents are happening in a communist nation like China, we can understand the reasons. There are governments at this day and age that do not operate under the principles of Democracy.

But India is one of the biggest democracy in the world. We boast that our democratic system is the biggest in the world? If an uprising of this magnitude does not produce the desired results, we need to go back to the drawing board and start some introspections. The view that India cannot interfere in another nations issue is not appropriate considering the magnitude of peoples sentiments and discontent.

Analyzing Indian foreign policy Dr Ambedkar long back said, “Thrust of our foreign policy is to solve problems of other nations rather than our own.”. Will Manmohan Sing and Sonia give up their personal agenda and fulfill their responsibilities towards Democracy?. We will know soon.

I am truly amazed by the show of solidarity by our akin in Tamil Nadu.

India’s foreign policy towards Sri Lanka is baffling to say the least. It refuses to help the Tamils on the basis of a policy of none interference in the internal affairs of an other state.

However, it it India’s financial, military and political support that is helping the Sri Lankan regime sustain its war on Tamils.

Examples include the US$ 100 million interest free loan, training army commandos, providing advanced equipment to navy and air force, and voting at the UN to keep Sri Lanka in Human Rights Council while even European countries voted against it.

Maybe the problem is that, especially in a Congress government, all powers are vested in very few hands; the Menon family in particular is pro-Sinhala.

I hope that that people of Tamil Nadu will continue with mass demonstrations to ensure that in a great democracy like India people’s will can make policy changes.

And as the article notes, if the Central government does not change its ways, Tamil Nadu ought to do some soul searching. If India won’t, who will express the 60million people’s interests and sentiments on the world stage?
